SKATER OF THE WEEK

Rachel "Thunder" Smith
Full Name: Rachel K. Smith

Sport: Inline Skating

Age: 14

Year Skating: 4

City and Country You Live In: Gahanna, Ohio USA

Typical Training Day: Cycles nearly everyday, skates frequently outdoors, cross trains in other sports.

Equipment you skate on: Ultimate Attitude 5-wheel frames, various 80mm wheels, Boss Swiss bearings, and Bont Boxer boots (Bont Boots RULE!).

Club you skate for: I was formerly with Ohio Thunder Team for skating and now CC Racing for BMX racing.

Sponsors names: None in skating, BMX co-sponsors include Troy Lee Designs (pads and pants), Damage Bicycles (frame), Sun Ringle (rims), T-B Trophy (shirts), Tektro (brakes), Kenda (tires & tubes, Hi, Mr. Wannamaker—I could use some tires!), Hot Shoppe, J & R Express and 1st Bankcard of Florida (team, I wouldn’t forget you Mr. Winters), and VBS (Joe, Anita and J.J.).

Favorite Food: Shepherd’s pie and BBQ ribs.

Your Interests/Hobbies: BMX bicycle racing, baseball, volleyball. In school I enjoy math and science.  I race BMX often and use skating to cross train.  I also love baseball (play middle infield) and enjoy volleyball.  My favorite hobby is playing my Viola.

Goals: To play my Viola and baseball in High School, to make the main in the 2001 UCI BMX Worlds (I am on Team USA), and, when I am old enough, to race professionally.

Career Highlights: I am a former BMX U.S. National Champion and once won the Maple Leaf National in Canada.  In USAC/RS speed skating I was once ranked second in Ohio, third in the Midwest Region and skated both class and 2-girl relay (with Ashley Bender) at the 1998 U.S. Nationals in California.

Anything else you would like over 10,000 skaters a week to read: Indoor inline speed skating is a great sport and I would like to try an outdoor event some day.  My speed skating experiences allowed me to become a more proficient skater and I still benefit in my other activities from the training.  My skating coach and mentor, Bob Caldwell, is the best and I enjoyed all my skating friends, coaches and trainers (Yes, you Shannon and Steve) with Ohio Thunder and in Newark, Ohio (Hi, Elton!).  As I grew I went from  4-wheel to 5-wheel frames and have always used Bont Boots (first a Sharkie and now a Boxer).  If you are just getting started in the sport of speed skating shy away from the trendiest products—they don’t help—and stick with proven winners, like Bont!
