LAKE CITY, Utah (Jan. 29, 2005) – The 2005 U.S. Junior
National Championships at the Olympic Oval came to an end
Saturday with a talented roster of skaters who qualified for a
spot on the junior world team.
Paul
Dyrud (Plymouth, Minn.) won the overall victory followed by
Mike Blumel (Woodbury, Minn.) and Patrick Meek (St.
Louis, Minn.).
Dyrud’s
victory stretched into the men’s 1500-meters where he won the
gold medal in 1:50.41. Blumel finished second in 1:51.16,
followed by Tyler Goff (Madison, Wis.) in 1:52.04.
Dyrud
took home another gold medal in the 5000-meters with a 6:46.09
finish time. Meek took home the silver medal in 6:47.36. Kreg
Greer (Marquette, Mich.) won the bronze medal in 6:51.67.
On
Saturday, in the men’s 500-meters, Goff won the gold medal in
37.00, followed by Dyrud in 37.24 and Blumel in 37.36.Dyrud took
home the gold again in the 3000m with a finish time of 3:52.18.
Meek won the silver with his 3:56.31 finish time.
Blumel won the bronze medal in 3:56.31.
On the
ladies’ side, Nancy Swider-Peltz, Jr. (Wheaton, Ill.) was
the overall winner followed by Margaret Crowley (Winnetka,
Ill.) and Erica Hawke (West Allis, Wis.)
On
Saturday, Hawke won the gold in medal in the 500-meters with a
finish time of 40.21. Swider-Peltz, Jr. took home the silver
with her 40.39 finish time and Crowley finished third in 41.82.
The same three women took the top three spots in the 1500meters
with Swider-Peltz, Jr. winning the gold followed by Crowley and
Hawke.
On
Sunday, Swider-Peltz, Jr. won the gold in the 1000-meters with a
finish time of 1:19.24. Hawke took home the silver and Crowley
the bronze.
Once
again, the same three stood atop the podium in the 3000-meters
with Crowley taking the gold with a finish time of 4:17.33,
followed by Swider-Peltz, Jr. and Hawke.
According
to Nancy Swider-Peltz, coach of Swider-Peltz, Jr. and Crowley,
her skaters accomplished their goals they set out for in the
competition.
“Nancy
has had a tough two weeks with her traveling with the team,
applying for colleges and studying,” her coach said. “But her
goal was to make the team and win this competition and she did
it.”
“Margaret, the defending champion, is also racing with a full
plate,” coach Swider-Peltz said. “She’s a full-time student at
Northwestern University and traveling from Chicago to Milwaukee
about three times a week to train. Those are tough elements to
juggle and she’s doing fantastic”
Maria
Lamb (River Falls, Wis.), as a Senior World Team member,
automatically qualified for the junior world team. In addition
to Lamb, Swider-Peltzer, Jr. and Crowley made the junior world
team. Hawke qualified as an alternate and will compete in the
junior country match.
On the
men’s side, Dyrud, Blumel and Meek all made the junior world
team as well. Goff will attend as an alternate and will compete
in the junior country match.
The
Junior Country Match will be held in Alkmaar, Netherlands
February 12-13 and the World Junior Championships will be held
in Seinjoki, Finland February 18-20.

US LT Championships - USA

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Jan. 30, 2005) – After two
exciting days of races with over 100 skaters from around
the USA, the 2005 National Long Track Championships came
to an end. The event was held in conjunction with the
2005 Junior Long Track Championships.
Guided by entertaining and witty commentary from elite
speedskaters Joey Cheek, Chris Needham and Tucker
Fredricks, speedskaters from the pony to the Master 70+
class skated to 51 new records.
On the ladies’ side, Sarah Chen of Southern California
won the pony championship with Hannah Curwin (Minn.)
winning the Midget gold medal. Katrina Hancock
(Illinois) and Sarah Krueger (Northern NY) won the
juvenile and junior championships, respectively.
Five-time Olympian and northern regional coach, Amy
Peterson, took home the gold in the senior ladies
category. She competed in the event to encourage her
skaters to try pack-style skating more.
In the Masters 40-49 class, Jan Zurcher took home the
gold and Suzanne Perles (Southern Calif.) won the
Masters 50-59 class.
On the men’s side, Andrew Clements (Michigan) won the
pony class and Conner Slivocka (Wisconsin) won the gold
in the midget class.
Robert Lawrence (Chesapeake) and Jordan Hinke
(Wisconsin) won gold for the juvenile and junior
classes.
Mike Blumel (Minnesota), coming off a silver medal
finish in the Junior Long Track Championships, won the
Intermediate class and Tyler Goff (Wasatch), who
finished fourth in the Junior Long Track Championships
won the Senior class.
Brian Boudreau (Baystate) and Sam Renshaw (Michigan) won
the Masters 30-39 and Masters 40-49 classes,
respectively.
Boris Leikin (Wasatch) took the gold for the Masters
50-59 class and Ron Scholefield (Michigan) and John
Sorce (Wisconsin) took the gold in the Masters 60-69 and
Masters 70+ classes, respectively.
