Davis, Klassen Set New 1500-Meters World Record
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Jan.
9) --
Superstar speedskaters Shani Davis (Chicago,
Ill.) and Cindy Klassen (CAN)
set new world records at the North
America & Oceania Regional Qualifier at the Utah Olympic
Oval in Salt Lake City Sunday.
Davis, coming off a
500-meters victory Saturday, set a new 1500-meters world
record in 1:43.33. The record was previously held by
teammate Derek Parra. Parra's record was 1:43.95 also
set in Salt Lake City on Feb. 19, 2002.
Klassen, also coming off a
successful day Saturday with two victories in the
500-meters and 3000-meters, set a new 1500-meters world
record Sunday with a time of 1:53.86. The previous
record was 1:54.02 and was set by Anni Friesinger
(GER) also in Salt Lake City on Feb. 20, 2002.
Chad Hedrick (Spring, Tex.)
set a personal best in the 1500-meters with a silver
medal finish in 1:45.07. Hedrick was aiming for a new
world record in the samalog. However, in the
10,000-meters, Hedrick was on track for the new record
when he failed to crossover on the first lap. Hedrick
was disqualified in the event but skated it again out of
competition. His 13:03.99 out of competition time
allowed Hedrick to “unofficially” have the world record.
“That was a dumb way to (get
a record),” Hedrick said after his race. “I wish my
10,000 meters was in-competition but I’m still glad I
re-skated it. Now I’ll have a lot of confidence going
into international competitions.”
Davis claimed the
10,000-meters victory and a new personal record with a
13:32.90 finish time. Teammate KC Boutiette (Tamoca,
Wash.) finished second in 13:40.34.
Kristine Holzer (Boise,
Ida.) set a new
personal record in the 1500-meters with a third place
finish of 1:58.24. Teammates Maria Lamb (River Falls,
Wis.) and Anna Ringsred (Duluth, Minn.) also
set personal records in the event with their fifth and
eighth place finishes, respectively.
Clara Hughes (CAN)
won the women’s 5000-meters event in 7:03.03, followed
by Klassen and Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, Wis.)
with a bronze medal finish in 7:12.16.
The Canadian women swept the
top three samalog finishes with Lamb finishing fourth
with 165.423 points. Holzer beat out teammate Raney by
7/100th of a point. Holzer point tally was
165.929 followed by Raney’s 165.936.
Davis claimed the samalog
victory with 143.359 points, followed by Boutiette with
152.674 points.
According to Tom Cushman,
U.S. Speedskating’s Long Track national coach, the
weekend’s events were “absolutely phenomenal.”
“The ice in Salt Lake City
is crazy fast,” Cushman said. “Once again Davis and
Hedrick battled it out like they did one year ago at the
qualifiers.”
The U.S. skaters who
qualified for a spot to represent the U.S. at the World
Championships (Allround) are Davis, Boutiette, Derek
Parra (Orlando, Fla.) and Clay Mull (Gastonia,
N.C.). The skaters who will fill the berths are up
to the discretion of the U.S. long track committee.
Lamb and Holzer also
qualified for a berth at the World Championships
(Allround), which will be held in Moscow, Russia Feb.
4-6.
